Metaphorically, el eje vertebral ('the vertebral axis') describes the central pillar of an argument or policy, and this figurative use is common in essays and journalism. The adjective is invariable for gender: la columna vertebral, el canal vertebral. Do not confuse with vertebrado (vertebrate, as in the animal class).
