turco

Turkish

adjective noun TOOR-koh Less Common

Usage Note

Turco functions as adjective (la cocina turca, el café turco) and noun (un turco, una turca). In Latin America, particularly Argentina and Chile, turco is used informally — sometimes disparagingly — for any Arab or Middle Eastern person, a legacy of early 20th-century immigration patterns when passports from the Ottoman Empire were common. The language is el turco.

Examples

"El café turco es muy fuerte."

Natural Translation

Turkish coffee is very strong.
