tomado

drunk

adjective toh-MAH-doh Rare

Also means

taken

Usage Note

Tomado as 'drunk' is a Latin American usage (especially Mexico and the Southern Cone), where tomar means to drink alcohol; in Spain one would more commonly say borracho. As the past participle of tomar it also simply means 'taken' (ya está tomado el turno — the spot is already taken). Context always disambiguates. The feminine form is tomada.

Examples

"Llegó tomado a la fiesta."

Natural Translation

He arrived drunk at the party.
