Usage Note
Tarde as an adverb means 'late': llegué tarde ('I arrived late'). As a feminine noun la tarde means 'the afternoon' or 'the early evening': buenas tardes is the standard greeting from roughly midday until dusk. The expression más vale tarde que nunca ('better late than never') is a common proverb. Its opposite as an adverb is temprano ('early').
