Usage Note
Amanecer is both the noun ('dawn', 'sunrise') and the intransitive verb ('to dawn', 'to wake up somewhere at daybreak'): amanecí en París ('I woke up in Paris at dawn'). As a noun it is masculine: el amanecer. The counterpart is anochecer ('dusk', 'to get dark'). The verb is impersonal when referring to daybreak: amanece a las seis ('it gets light at six').
