sumido

plunged into

adjective soo-MEE-doh Rare

Also means

immersed in

Usage Note

Sumido is the past participle of sumir used adjectivally, nearly always followed by en (sumido en la pobreza, sumido en el caos). It conveys being deeply engulfed or overwhelmed by a state. The construction is more literary and formal than everyday metido en or hundido en, and it does not imply the subject's own action.

Examples

"El país estaba sumido en una crisis profunda."

Natural Translation

The country was plunged into a deep crisis.
