suburbano

suburban

adjective soob-oor-BAH-noh Rare

Origin: From Latin suburbanus, from sub- + urbs ('city').

Usage Note

Suburbano describes anything belonging to or typical of the suburbs: zona suburbana, tren suburbano. In Spain, cercanías (the suburban rail network) is sometimes called tren suburbano. Note that suburbio in Spanish often connotes a deprived outer district rather than the comfortable English 'suburb' — a potential false-friend trap when translating.

Examples

"Vive en una tranquila zona suburbana."

Natural Translation

She lives in a quiet suburban area.
