sortear

to dodge

verb sohr-teh-AHR Rare

Also means

to draw lots

Usage Note

Sortear covers two quite different senses: to navigate around an obstacle (sortear dificultades, to get around difficulties) and to draw lots or raffle (sortear un premio, to raffle a prize). The first, figurative meaning is more frequent in modern journalism. The noun for the lottery draw is el sorteo. Do not confuse sortear with surtir (to supply/stock).

Examples

"Tuvo que sortear varios obstáculos en la carretera."

Natural Translation

He had to dodge several obstacles on the road.
