Usage Note

Ruin (note: one syllable, stressed on the final since it ends in a consonant) means contemptible, base, or morally worthless when applied to a person, and stingy or petty in some uses. It is a false friend: English 'ruin' is ruina in Spanish, not ruin. Applied to things it can mean shabby or miserable; the noun ruindad means baseness or a base act.

Examples

"Fue un acto ruin traicionar a su propio amigo."

Natural Translation

It was a despicable act to betray his own friend.
