Usage Note

Responder is used with a when answering a question or letter: responder a una pregunta, responder al correo. It also means to respond to treatment (el paciente respondió bien al tratamiento) and to be responsible for something: yo no respondo de sus actos = 'I'm not responsible for his actions'. The noun derivative is respuesta.
