Usage Note

Remontar has two core senses: to ascend or go back against the current (remontar un río, 'to go upstream'), and to overcome a deficit (remontar el marcador, 'to turn a score around'). The reflexive remontarse is used for dating back historically: se remonta al siglo XII ('it dates back to the 12th century').
