Raso describes a smooth, level surface (campo raso, open field) or an unadorned military rank: soldado raso is a private (the lowest rank), a fixed phrase every learner of military or historical Spanish should know. It also names a smooth satin-like fabric (tela rasa). The phrase a campo raso means 'in the open air' or 'exposed to the elements.'
