Usage Note

Pródigo carries two related senses: wasteful or extravagant with money, and lavish or abundantly generous (pródigo en alabanzas — 'lavish with praise'). It is best known from the biblical phrase el hijo pródigo ('the prodigal son'). Note the written accent on the first syllable, making it an esdrújula (antepenultimate stress).
