Usage Note
Promesa is a straightforward cognate, but learners should note the idiomatic cumplir una promesa ('to keep a promise') — the verb is cumplir, not guardar as one might expect from English. Promesa can also describe a promising young talent (es una gran promesa del tenis). The related verb prometer is fully regular and very common.
Examples
"Cumplió su promesa y llegó a tiempo."
Natural Translation
She kept her promise and arrived on time.
