pretendido

supposed, so-called

adjective preh-ten-DEE-doh Rare

Also means

intended, would-be

Usage Note

Pretendido most often means 'supposed' or 'so-called', casting doubt on a claim — el pretendido experto ('the so-called expert'). It can also mean 'intended' in the sense of something aimed at. Be aware that the verb pretender is a false friend: it means 'to claim' or 'to attempt', not 'to pretend' (which is fingir).

Examples

"El pretendido beneficio resultó ser una pérdida."

Natural Translation

The supposed benefit turned out to be a loss.
