Usage Note

Prendedor denotes a decorative pin or brooch worn on clothing, and is the standard term across much of Latin America. In Spain the word broche or alfiler is more common for the same object. The word derives from prender ('to fasten'), and is not to be confused with encendedor ('lighter').
