Usage Note

Anillo is the most general word for a ring worn on the finger, including an engagement or wedding ring (anillo de compromiso, anillo de boda). The alternative sortija is used in Spain for ornamental rings. Anillo also appears in technical contexts (a ring shape, e.g. anillo de saturno — Saturn's rings).
