polarizar

to polarize

verb poh-lah-ree-SAHR Rare

Usage Note

Polarizar means to polarize, either in a physical/optical sense or, more commonly today, in a social and political sense (to divide into two sharply opposed groups). The related adjective is polarizado and the noun is polarización. It is conjugated like other -zar verbs: the z changes to c before e (so the first-person preterite is polaricé).

Examples

"El debate polarizó a la sociedad en dos bandos."

Natural Translation

The debate polarized society into two camps.
