pese

despite, in spite of

conjunction PEH-seh Less Common

Usage Note

Pese almost always appears in the fixed phrase pese a (despite) or pese a que (despite the fact that). It is a concessive connector interchangeable with a pesar de, but pese a is slightly more formal and common in written registers. It does not stand alone.

Examples

"Salimos pese a la lluvia."

Natural Translation

We went out despite the rain.
