Usage Note
Permiso covers both the abstract right to do something and a physical document granting it (permiso de conducir, driving licence; permiso de trabajo, work permit). Con permiso is the standard polite phrase for 'excuse me' when passing someone or entering a space — a social lubricant learners need early. Pedir permiso ('to ask for permission') is its most common verb collocation.
