Usage Note

Pedir is an -i stem-changing verb (pido, pides…). It means to ask for something or to order food/drink; contrast with preguntar, which means to ask a question. Pedir prestado means to borrow (literally 'to ask for lent'). To make a request, Spanish uses pedir with an indirect object: te pido un favor (I'm asking you a favour).
