Origin: From Latin municipalis, from municipium (town with Roman citizenship).

Usage Note

Municipal does not change form between masculine and feminine (el consejo municipal, la piscina municipal), only the plural municipales. It refers to anything belonging to or run by a local government body, such as policía municipal (local police) or mercado municipal (town market).
