Materializar means to cause something abstract to become real, or (reflexively, materializarse) for a plan or hope to actually happen. The reflexive form is especially common: el acuerdo no se materializó (the agreement never materialised). It follows the -izar pattern: spelling change in preterite materializématerialicé.
