Usage Note
Mando covers both the abstract sense of authority (estar al mando = 'to be in command') and a physical device: mando a distancia is the standard term for a TV remote control in Spain. In Latin America control remoto is more common for the device. The plural mandos can refer to military or institutional leadership collectively.
