Usage Note
Licenciar has two common uses: granting a licence or degree, and releasing soldiers from military duty. The reflexive licenciarse is the standard way to say 'to graduate' from university in Spain: se licenció en Derecho ('she graduated in Law'). In Latin America graduarse is more common for university graduation.
