honra

honor

noun OHN-rrah Rare

Origin: from Latin honorem, 'honor'

Also means

reputation; dignity

Usage Note

Honra is a weightier, more archaic or literary word than honor, often implying public reputation and social dignity — it was central to the Spanish Golden Age concept of the 'honor code' dramatized by Calderón and Lope de Vega. Today honra is less common in everyday speech than honor, but survives in formal phrases like en honra de ('in honor of'). The verb honrar ('to honor') derives from the same root.

Examples

"Defendió su honra ante todos los presentes."

Natural Translation

He defended his honor before everyone present.
