hongo

mushroom

noun OHN-goh Rare

Also means

fungus

Usage Note

Hongo covers both the edible mushroom and any fungus in a biological sense, while seta is preferred in Spain specifically for wild edible mushrooms. A learner visiting a Spanish market may need both words: a vendor in Madrid might say seta for the same item a Mexican vendor calls hongo. In a medical context hongo also refers to a fungal infection of the skin.

Examples

"Añadí un hongo al guiso."

Natural Translation

I added a mushroom to the stew.
