genoma

genome

noun heh-NOH-mah Rare

Origin: Coined in German (Genom, 1920) from Greek genos (origin) + -oma (body).

Usage Note

Genoma is masculine despite ending in -a: el genoma humano. This is a common pattern for scientific terms borrowed from German or Greek. Do not confuse it with gen (gene) — the genoma is the complete set of all genes in an organism.

Examples

"El genoma humano fue descifrado en el año 2003."

Natural Translation

The human genome was decoded in 2003.
