Also means
to earn
Usage Note
Ganar means both 'to win' a competition (ganaron el partido — they won the match) and 'to earn' money or a living (gana mil euros al mes — she earns a thousand euros a month). The reflexive ganarse intensifies effort: se ganó la vida como músico (he made his living as a musician). Ganar tiempo means 'to buy time'. Don't confuse with vencer, which focuses on defeating an opponent rather than achieving a prize.
Examples
"El equipo ganó el campeonato."
Natural Translation
The team won the championship.
