Fruto and fruta are not interchangeable. Fruta refers to edible fruit you buy and eat; fruto refers to the botanical product of a plant or tree (including nuts and pods) and is also used figuratively: el fruto de su trabajo (the fruit of one's labour). Frutos secos (dried fruits and nuts) is the standard culinary term.
