fresa

strawberry

noun FREH-sah Rare

Also means

drill bit

Usage Note

Fresa is the standard word for strawberry across most of Latin America, whereas in Spain the dominant term is fresón (a larger cultivar) or simply fresa in many regions. In Mexican Spanish, fresa has a strong colloquial second life as a noun/adjective meaning a preppy or snobbish person (similar to 'posh' or 'bougie'), with no botanical connotation whatsoever in that context. The technical sense of a rotating drill or milling cutter (fresa in engineering) is a third, unrelated meaning.

Examples

"Me comí un tazón de fresas con nata."

Natural Translation

I ate a bowl of strawberries with cream.
