Fractura is the standard medical term for a broken bone (fractura de cadera = hip fracture). Outside medicine it describes any split or rupture — geological (fractura tectónica) or social (fractura social = social divide). The related verb is fracturar(se). Do not confuse with rotura, which is the more informal everyday word for a break or tear.
