Usage Note

Extinción most commonly appears in environmental discourse (en peligro de extinción = 'endangered, at risk of extinction'), but it also applies to fire-fighting (extinción de incendios = 'fire fighting/suppression') and the extinction of debts or obligations in legal language. The verb is extinguir ('to extinguish, to wipe out').
