existente

existing

adjective ek-sis-TEN-teh Less Common

Usage Note

Existente is a formal adjective used to describe something already in place, as in la normativa existente ('the existing regulation'). It is not as common in everyday speech as actual (meaning 'current,' not 'actual' — another false friend) or vigente ('currently in force'). It functions as an invariable adjective in gender but agrees in number: los recursos existentes.

Examples

"Hay que aprovechar los recursos existentes."
