Euskadi

noun eus-KAH-dee Rare

Origin: From Basque Euskadi, coined by nationalist leader Sabino Arana in the late 19th century, combining Euska- (Basque) + -di (collective suffix).

Also means

Basque Country

Usage Note

Euzkadi (also spelled Euskadi, the more current spelling) is the Basque-language name for the Basque Country. In Spanish official and press contexts País Vasco is the standard name, while Euskadi is preferred by Basque nationalists and in the autonomous community's own institutions. The spelling Euzkadi with z is an older Arana-era form now less common.

Examples

"Euskadi tiene su propio parlamento."

Natural Translation

The Basque Country has its own parliament.
