encaminar

to direct

verb ehn-kah-mee-NAHR Rare

Also means

to guide

Usage Note

Encaminar literally means to set someone on a path (camino), and figuratively to steer or direct efforts toward a goal. The reflexive encaminarse means 'to head toward' a place or outcome: el país se encamina hacia la recuperación (the country is heading toward recovery). It is more purposeful and formal than the common dirigir or guiar.

Examples

"El maestro encaminó a sus alumnos hacia el éxito."

Natural Translation

The teacher guided his students toward success.
