Digerir is an irregular verb (stem-changing: e -> i in many forms, e.g. digiero, digiere, digieren). It refers both to physical digestion of food and, figuratively, to mentally processing difficult news or experiences — no puedo digerir esa noticia (I can't digest that news). The figurative sense is widely used and not considered informal.
