Usage Note

Desprestigiar means to damage someone's standing or reputation — stronger than criticar but less legal than difamar. It is a regular -ar verb. The reflexive desprestigiarse (to lose prestige) is common in political and sports commentary: el partido se desprestigió (the party lost credibility).
