decidir

to decide

verb deh-see-DEER Common

Origin: From Latin decidere, 'to cut off, determine.'

Usage Note

Decidir takes a direct infinitive when the subject is the same (decidió salir tarde, 'he decided to leave late') and a que clause with the subjunctive when subjects differ (decidió que fuéramos nosotros). The reflexive decidirse a emphasizes the moment of making up one's mind: al final me decidí a ir ('I finally decided to go'). The derived noun is decisión.
