cóndor

condor

noun KOHN-dohr Rare

Origin: Quechua kuntur

Usage Note

Cóndor entered Spanish from Quechua kuntur, the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) — the world's largest flying bird by wingspan. It is a national symbol of several Andean countries (Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia). The stress accent is required to mark it as paroxytone despite ending in a consonant.

Examples

"El cóndor vuela sobre los Andes."

Natural Translation

The condor flies over the Andes.
