contusión

bruise; contusion

noun kohn-too-SYOHN Rare

Origin: From Latin 'contusio', from 'contundere' (to beat, to bruise).

Usage Note

Contusión is the medical and everyday term for a bruise or blunt-force injury without breaking the skin. It is more formal than moratón or cardenal (colloquial words for a bruise). The plural contusiones is common in accident and sports-injury reports. Note that the written accent on the final syllable (-ón) is dropped in the plural contusiones because stress naturally falls on the penultimate syllable.

Examples

"El jugador sufrió una contusión en la rodilla."

Natural Translation

The player suffered a bruise on the knee.
