Usage Note
Constatar means to establish or confirm a fact by observation — closer to 'to ascertain' or 'to note' than simply 'to check'. It is more formal than comprobar or verificar and is common in journalism and academic writing (los investigadores constataron que…). It does not carry the sense of 'to make sure something is done', only of observing and recording a fact.
