consentir

to consent, to allow

verb kon-sen-TEER Rare

Also means

to spoil (a child)

Usage Note

Consentir carries two quite different senses depending on context: consentir en algo means 'to agree to something' or 'to allow it', while consentir a un niño means 'to spoil a child' by giving in to every whim. It is a stem-changing verb (e-ie in the present: consiento, consientes), so learners must watch for the vowel shift.

Examples

"No puedo consentir ese comportamiento."

Natural Translation

I cannot allow that behaviour.
