Usage Note
Cometer is almost always used with negative acts: cometer un error ('to make a mistake'), cometer un crimen ('to commit a crime'). It is a false friend with English 'commit' in the sense of dedicating oneself to something — for that, use comprometerse or dedicarse.
Examples
"No quiero cometer el mismo error otra vez."
Natural Translation
I don't want to make the same mistake again.
