major (military rank)

Usage Note

Comandante is both a military rank (roughly equivalent to 'major' or 'commander') and a general title for anyone in command. It is common-gender, so the feminine is formed by changing the article: la comandante. In Latin America it is also used informally for a respected leader or figurehead.
