Usage Note
Civiles is the plural of civil, which itself functions as both noun ('civilian') and adjective ('civil'). As a standalone noun it is typically masculine plural but can include women: los civiles covers a mixed group. The singular noun civil also appears in legal and military contexts — guardia civil (Spain's national police force) is a fixed compound that should not be broken apart.
Examples
"Muchos civiles huyeron de la zona de combate."
Natural Translation
Many civilians fled the combat zone.
