chalet

noun chah-LEH Rare

Origin: From French chalet.

Usage Note

Chalet in Spain commonly refers to any detached house with a garden, not just an Alpine-style lodge. Chalet adosado means a terraced or row house (attached to its neighbours). The plural can be chalets or chalés (the RAE-preferred spelling). Borrowed from French, the final 't' is usually silent, hence the variant chalé.
