capitana

captain (female)

noun kah-pee-TAH-nah Rare

Usage Note

Capitana is the feminine form of capitán and can refer to a woman who captains a team, a ship, or a military unit. Historically it also meant the flagship of a fleet — la capitana — a usage now largely archaic. In modern sports journalism it is the standard term for a female team captain.
