Usage Note
Canal covers both a man-made waterway (el Canal de Panamá) and a broadcast channel (el canal de televisión). In the latter sense it is always masculine. Note that cadena is also used for a TV network or chain of channels. Canal and channel are cognates and near-equivalents, making this one of the easier Spanish nouns for English learners.
