Usage Note

Bombero derives from bomba (pump), recalling the hand pumps used historically to fight fires. The feminine bombera is fully standard in modern Spanish. The plural los bomberos is used generically for the fire brigade. In parts of Latin America, bombero can also informally refer to a petrol-station attendant.
